PPE Inspection Checklist FAQ
How often should PPE be inspected?
Workers should look over PPE before each use, and defective or damaged PPE must not be used (29 CFR 1910.132(e)). For respirators used in routine situations, 29 CFR 1910.134(h)(3) says they are inspected before each use and during cleaning. Many workplaces add a monthly documented inspection.
How often should a hard hat be replaced?
The manufacturer sets the replacement interval for the shell and the suspension, so check the label and instructions. Replace it right away if it is cracked, dented, chalky, or has taken a hard hit.
What should a PPE inspection checklist include?
Commonly the item, who uses it, its condition, whether it is clean and stored properly, the result, and when it was replaced. For respirators, many workplaces also track the fit test date.
Can I use this PPE checklist for construction?
Yes. Hard hats, harnesses, eye and hearing protection, gloves, and footwear are all in the list. Add items your trades use, such as welding helmets or high-visibility vests.
